Discovering Genting Highlands
Disappointment was not what I had in mind when planning this trip. Initially, we were supposed to visit a strawberry farm in Genting, but upon finding out it was permanently closed, we had to pivot and took a cable car ride to SkyAvenue Mall. While I was initially hesitant, the cable car ride turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip—it offered a serene and breathtaking view of the mountains.
Still, I felt a little out of place. As a Muslim striving to align my choices with my values, Genting Highlands presented some challenges. The blinding lights of the mall, the predominance of non-halal restaurants, and the general atmosphere were not what I expected. But this trip taught me to look beyond first impressions and find hidden blessings in the form of reflections.
“And whoever fears Allah – He will make for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect.” (Quran, 65:2-3)

Striving for Positivity in Challenging Environments
The atmosphere at Genting Highlands, with its theme parks and casinos, is built around indulgence and worldly enjoyment. It’s easy to feel disconnected in such a place. But I realized that these moments are opportunities to reflect on my own choices and reaffirm my principles.
The SkyWorlds theme park charges RM22 per ride—something I find excessive. However, it reminded me of the importance of mindful spending. Vacations don’t need to revolve around expensive attractions. We can find joy in simplicity, and through that, reflect on Allah’s blessings.
“Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.” (Quran, 17:27)
Finding Strength in Good Company
One of the things I appreciate most about this trip is the company of my teachers. They are among the kindest, most caring people I’ve met. They are enthusiastic about Islam and eager to grow in their faith—they just need more guidance to follow the right path. This realization was a turning point for me. Instead of feeling disconnected, I saw this as an opportunity to invite them toward the beauty of living according to the Quran and Sunnah.
“Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best.” (Quran, 16:125)
My teachers’ willingness to compromise and adjust plans so everyone could be included reminded me of how important it is to foster unity and mutual understanding.

Gratitude for Genting Highlands’ Silver Linings
Amidst the challenges, there were countless blessings to be grateful for. The cool weather was refreshing, and it felt wonderful to sleep without needing air conditioning or fans. My daughter, Maryam, slept peacefully, giving me rare quiet moments to reflect and recharge.
The cable car ride was another highlight. The serene views of the mountains, surrounded by lush greenery, were a powerful reminder of Allah’s creation and His infinite beauty.
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, are signs for those of understanding.” (Quran, 3:190)

Joy in Togetherness: The Steamboat Potluck
One of the most beautiful moments of the trip was our steamboat potluck back at the hotel. Each of us brought ingredients to share, creating a sense of unity and joy. The laughter and warmth reminded me of Hari Raya vibes, a feeling of togetherness and gratitude.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, “The best of you are those who feed others and return greetings.” (Sunan Abu Dawood, 4829)
This simple meal was a testament to the idea that true joy doesn’t come from extravagant activities but from shared moments of love and connection. It’s somehow a refreshing reminder that the best moments in life are sometimes the smallest or the simplest of acts that we wouldn’t have thought would be so endearing to us.
Concern for My Daughter’s Environment
Bringing my daughter to a place like this has been my biggest regret. The flashing lights, loud music, and overall environment feel so far removed from the atmosphere I want to create for her.
- Parental Reminder: Allah says, “O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones…” (Surah At-Tahrim, 66:6). This verse is a wake-up call to prioritize her upbringing in an environment that nurtures faith.
I keep wondering, how can she grow up to be a hafizah or a strong Muslimah if she’s exposed to this? It’s a strong reminder for me to be more mindful in the future.

Reflections and Personal Growth
This trip was more than just a holiday; it was a journey of self-reflection. It reminded me of the importance of having purpose in all of the enjoyment we experience. I make sure to really plan ahead and be far-sighted for next future trips Insyaallah. Time is valuable and I want every time I spend is time reconnecting and remembering Allah and that Allah is pleased with what I do. While Genting Highlands is not a place I’d typically choose because of all the jahiliyyah-ness going on in it, I believe Allah placed me here to learn valuable lessons. One of it is definitely taking guard of the time and Iman of not just my own but also everyone else’s around me no matter where I am and as best that I can.
Vacations should not compromise our values. In fact, vacations should be a means for us to reflect and be closer to Allah. We can always enjoy the beauty of nature, like the views from the cable car, or simple joys like shared meals, all the while, faith and Iman is the one guiding us through all those beautiful moments.
“They are those who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth, saying, ‘Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly. Glory be to You; so protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” (Quran, 3:191)
The Next Adventure: Bukit Tinggi’s French Village
As I sit here in the early morning, reflecting on this trip, I’m looking forward to today’s adventure—Bukit Tinggi’s French Village. I’ve been there before with my husband, and it’s a beautiful place that replicates the charm of a French village. It’s perfect for someone like me, who dreams of traveling the world and ponder upon how amazing is Allah’s creation and what does He requires of me with all these blessings that He gave.
I’m excited to soak in the beauty of this unique destination and create more positive memories with my group.

Conclusion: Gratitude and Purpose
Looking back, this trip to Genting Highlands has been a mix of challenges and blessings. While it initially felt overwhelming, I’ve come to see it as an opportunity for personal growth, gratitude, and connection.
The cable car ride, the cool weather, and the steamboat potluck were moments of joy that reminded me of Allah’s countless blessings. More importantly, being with my teachers has inspired me to strengthen my own faith and to gently encourage others toward the beauty of Islam.
“So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth. And do not let those who have no certainty of faith discourage you.” (Quran, 30:60)
With each experience, I’m reminded that Allah places us in situations for a reason. This trip has shown me that even in environments that feel challenging, there are lessons to be learned and blessings to uncover.
